Bio

I began my career in woodworking by apprenticing at the Arques School of Traditional Wooden Boat Building in 2010. There I studied full time with master boat builder Bob Darr. During that time I learned many aspects of wooden boat building including design, lofting, set-up, various methods of framing, planking, deck construction, interior joinerwork, bronze and lead casting and wood harvesting. There I contributed to the restoration of Freda, a gaff rigged sloop, believed to be the oldest remaining sailing vessel on the west coast. After completing training in 2012, I worked in the maritime community in Sausalito, CA doing repair work. I was hired on as a personal craftsman in northern California where I continued expanding my skill set into furniture and architectural details for the next 4 years. During this time I completed many small and some large pieces of furniture as well as various other projects. I also occasionally taught the beginner level class at the Arques School and contributed to their ongoing projects as a craftsman. In the spring of 2016 my family relocated to Wilmington, NC en route to New Orleans, LA where I completed a bare hull restoration on a 36′ Gibson houseboat where we now live. I worked self employed on various small home improvement projects until meeting the southeast North Carolina wooden boat community at the Southport Wooden Boat Show. This led to my involvement with the repair of a carvel planked 50′ Elco. I was then hired by the yard where that work was completed where I had an introduction to contemporary boat maintenance and repair in the southeastern US. This experience provided me with opportunity to gain valuable experience in modern boat carpentry including veneer, FRP, King Starboard, Lexan, Plexiglass, marine glazing using Sika products, appliance installation, electronics mounting panels, and cold molded building techniques. I am now serving the greater New Orleans area with a commitment to providing not only excellent project execution, but skilled project planning, management and clear communication with the owners best interest as the core of my business practice.
Reviews
Ryan Weakley & Sarah Cox – Sea Cow
We met Scott Ryan in 2017 in Wilmington, NC, while restoring our 1982 Stevens 47. We were at a local boat yard, and he came to work there as the head marine carpenter. From the outset he won us over as a down-to-Earth guy who was humble in his trade.
